Ice Hotels

Suite 01

Seasonal snow-and-ice lodgings rebuilt each winter and gone again by spring.

A note on this section: purpose-built ice and snow hotels are genuinely rare, and this index has now covered the operating ones across its earlier editions. Rather than pad the category with properties that do not exist or with winter hotels that merely look the part, it is listed here with a single entry. The section will grow again when the supply does.

Suite 01

Iglu-Dorf Davos-Klosters

Davos, Switzerland

Iglu-Dorf builds a village of snow above Davos each winter and takes it down again when the season ends, which means no two years produce quite the same hotel. Sleeping chambers are cut and shaped from packed snow, some plain and some carved by artists brought in for the build; the temperature inside sits close to freezing regardless of what the weather outside is doing. Guests sleep in expedition-grade bags on insulated bases, and the briefing before bed is thorough.

The evening follows a fixed shape: a walk or a lift ride up to the village, fondue in a communal snow room, a soak in an outdoor hot tub under the mountains, then bed. Bathrooms are in a heated service building a short walk away. It is a one-night proposition rather than a stay, and almost everyone treats it as such — the morning descent into a normal hotel with a normal shower is part of the experience.
